We are looking for people to work together and become cooperative members.
Context
Atelier cartographique is a Brussels-based cooperative specialising in cartographic practices. Through software development, design and territorial research, we aim to meet the needs for free software, print representations and support around spatial data.
We wish to initiate a reflection on the status of digital tools in our daily lives.
Atelier Cartographique also aims at becoming a place of empowerment for its workers through horizontal governance practices and by taking into account our specific needs and aspirations.
Participation in Atelier cartographique projects
We are looking for a person motivated to participate in the cooperative's various projects. Currently, we are working on application development, research and participatory mapping workshop projects, among other things (see projects ). We are open to proposals for collaboration that are slightly different from this invitation and we seek to promote gender balance within the cooperative.
We are inviting people who relate in some way to the experiences and motivations below
- Enthusiasm for our working structure (horizontality, equal pay) and for the principle of a workers' cooperative;
- Desire to work collectively and collaboratively within an interdisciplinary team.
- Interest in producing and supporting projects in a variety of contexts (public administration, academic research, cultural sector, non-profit and activist sector);
- Interest in the challenges of cartography and the production of information systems;
- Interest in the development of technical, aesthetic and political issues related to representations of territory.
We are currently inviting people to join us in different areas of the cooperative:

Graphic design, typography and cartography, as well as the political implications of the
aesthetics of the tools we produce (1 person).
More details
- Experience/skills in graphic design: visual identity, interface design, typography.
- Experience – or interest – in visualizing spatial, temporal and relational information.
- Interest in the use of free software in the field of graphic design.
- Experience or curiosity for team development and use of Git.

Software writing, web development, and the cultural implications of technological objects (1
person).
More details
- Technical/technological skills in development (web), with geomatics to follow. - Knowledge of JavaScript/TypeScript, Python, SQL, etc. or similar languages.
- Experience in team development and use of Git.
- Open to sharing software writing practices with other members of the cooperative (developers and non-developers).
- Motivated to participate in the writing of software projects.
- Ability to discuss the technological objects produced.
- Interest in functional programming
- Interest in free software production

Coordination, project management, analysis and writing, as well as developing substantive
discourse on the cooperative's productions (1 person)
More details
- FR required, NL/EN and other languages welcome.
- Project management skills.
- Good writing skills (drafting detailed proposals, reports, project descriptions, articles, documentation, summaries, general communications, etc.).
- Good oral communication skills (teaching, summarising) and ability to address a variety of audiences (customers/partners and colleagues).
- Interest in the use and promotion of free software.
- Interest in developing the skills of our partners and customers in data management tools.
Practicalities
We are thus looking for someone who wants to participate in what is done at Atelier, how it is done, how it is organised, with whom, and with what resources.

Our office
- Rue du chimiste, in Anderlecht (Euclides building).

Status
- Everyone at Atelier cartographique is currently self-employed - social security contributions and withholding taxes are paid by the cooperative in proportion to the time worked. It is also possible to use Smart-type contracts (to be discussed).

Agreement
- An agreement will be drawn up to specify the commitments of the cooperative and the individual. We imagine that the person will gradually become involved in the management of the cooperative.

Work time
- From 2 to 4 days per week – to be discussed depending on material possibilities and ongoing projects. The daily rate that can be invoiced corresponds to the remuneration of AC cooperative members (contributions and withholding tax included).

Joining the cooperative
- After a period of one year of close collaboration with the cooperative, the person eventually joins the cooperative and becomes administrator. In this case, we ask that the person considers Atelier Cartographique as their main activity.

Material
- The cooperative provides a computer and a workstation.
